Park-Hospital Leipzig Implants 50th Patient-Specific Shoulder Endoprosthesis
Trauma-related damage to the shoulder joint, osteoarthritis, rheumatic diseases, or defects of the rotator cuff often result in severe pain and significant loss of mobility. When conservative treatment options fail to achieve sufficient results, surgical intervention is frequently required. If implantation of an endoprosthesis becomes necessary but extensive bone defects are present due to severe wear or previous surgeries, the use of conventional implants often reaches its limits. In such cases, secure fixation within the bone and restoration of a well-functioning joint geometry are frequently not possible with standard prostheses. Patient-specific implants, which are planned and manufactured based on computed tomography (CT) imaging, can be used as an effective solution in these situations.
"We are proud to have treated our 50th patient with a so-called custom-made implant in July 2025. Since the first application of this technology in 2019, the shoulder team at Helios Park-Hospital Leipzig has gained extensive experience in both the planning and surgical implementation of this specialized treatment approach. This enables us to offer a safe and effective alternative for patients with extensive bone defects of the shoulder joint, where implantation of a conventional endoprosthesis is difficult or even impossible. This success story is also built on the excellent collaboration between our team and external partners who support the planning and implantation process of these specialized endoprostheses."
– says Sebastian Gros, Senior Consultant, Head of the Shoulder Surgery Section
In 2025, Helios Park-Hospital Leipzig was awarded the DVSE Silver Endoprosthesis Seal for the fourth consecutive year. This distinction highlights the outstanding expertise of the hospital’s Orthopedic and Traumatology Center in the field of shoulder surgery, with a particular focus on shoulder arthroplasty. (The award is granted by the DVSE – the German-Austrian-Swiss Association for Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.)
