Krefeld: Expansion of robotic surgery and advancement of operating suites
Treatment numbers quadrupled
The Ortho Campus has now become one of the largest orthopedic specialist clinics in North Rhine-Westphalia, performing nearly 2,000 joint replacement surgeries per year.
“In 2020, we were among the first clinics in Germany to combine joint surgery and rehabilitation under one roof. This integrated, end-to-end treatment concept has been very well received. We are especially pleased that our continuous investment in cutting-edge technologies and infrastructure, as well as in the training and professional development of our staff, has been confirmed by the NRW Hospital Plan. Since the beginning, the number of procedures performed at our site has nearly quadrupled. The shared goal of becoming one of the leading endoprosthetic clinics in the region—and the consistent effort to achieve it—has made this success possible. We are very proud of this team achievement.”

Extensive expertise in robot-assisted joint surgery
With experience from more than 2,000 robot-assisted procedures to date, the center has reached another major milestone. “The response to this innovative system has been so positive that, due to the growing number of patients, we have already acquired a second robot,” reports Prof. Clayton N. Kraft, Chief Physician of the Department of Orthopedics, Trauma and Hand Surgery. The system allows for even more precise joint implantation while preserving bone and soft tissue. As a result, patients are able to get back on their feet more quickly and with less pain after surgery.
“After being certified last year as a maximum-care endoprosthetics center, the next step is to expand our operating room capacity. Our goal is to be able to treat patients in four operating theaters by 2026 instead of the current three, in order to reduce waiting times,” Prof. Kraft adds.
Else Kröner Award for Senior Track
Providing patients with the therapy best suited to their individual needs is the guiding principle of the Ortho Campus—and with great success. The interdisciplinary treatment concept “Senior Track,” developed in Hüls, was recently honored with the Else Kröner Award. This award recognizes the outstanding commitment of a treatment team to the benefit of patients—far beyond what would normally be expected. “Senior Track” is an innovative treatment pathway that enables older people to access endoprosthetic care that significantly improves their quality of life. From the very beginning, orthopedics, geriatrics, and anesthesiology work together to specifically address the needs of older patients undergoing joint replacement surgery. “Following comprehensive screening, senior patients receive anesthesia, geriatric care, and postoperative pain management tailored specifically to their needs. Developed in 2023, we were already able to treat 75 patients in the Senior Track in 2024, with the oldest patient being a remarkable 98 years old,” Prof. Kraft explains. “While each therapy is individually tailored, the goal is always the same: to sustainably improve patients’ quality of life.”
