Helios Hospital Gotha: 250 operations with the Mako System
At the Musculoskeletal Center of Helios Hospital Thüringen Mitte, the orthopedic team at Helios Hospital in Blankenhain is increasingly relying on computer-assisted procedures for knee surgeries. Thanks to highly precise technology, procedures can now be performed even more safely and gently. The so-called Mako robot supports surgeons by enabling millimeter-precise cuts based on detailed 3D scans. Full control always remains with the operating surgeon — the system serves as an assistant and enhances precision. Mahmoud Otabashi, Site manager of the Helios Hospital Blankenhain, says:
I am grateful that we are able to offer this modern technology to our patients. It enables us to perform the surgery precisely according to plan and to support the healing process in the best possible way.
Patients benefit from individually planned surgery, reduced tissue trauma, and a faster recovery process. For many, this means the opportunity for noticeable pain relief and improved quality of life. For Senior Physician Mahmoud Otabashi and his team, computer-assisted knee surgeries have long been well established. After numerous training sessions with the system and clinical observations of robot-assisted procedures, they use the technology routinely and confidently. The Mako robots do not operate autonomously; they follow the surgeon’s precise hand movements while preventing cuts from going too deep. The procedure is based on high-resolution knee scans, which allow the surgery to be planned in exact detail in advance. Prof. Dr. med. Thomas Mückley, Chief Physician of Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery at the Helios Hospital Gotha, adds:
My team at the Musculoskeletal Center in Blankenhain, Gotha, and Erfurt provides our patients with the best possible medical care at each location and, when necessary, travels together with the patients to the surgical procedures.
