ENDO team once again on duty at the Hamburg Open
A central role is played by Dr. Volker Carrero and Dr. Bastian Toussaint. Both physicians have extensive experience in caring for elite and professional athletes and specialize in sports orthopedics and the treatment of acute sports injuries. Carrero has served as tournament physician for the Hamburg Open for 18 years and, together with his team, has provided medical support for around 45 professional tennis tournaments at both national and international levels.
“For us, the Hamburg Open is much more than just a sports medicine assignment — it is truly a home tournament right in the heart of Hamburg,” explains Carrero. “Over the years, a special connection develops with the tournament, the city, and of course the players themselves. You can really feel this unique spirit of elite sports, solidarity, and the shared ambition of being hosts for world-class international athletes.”
During the tournament, Helios ENDO-Hospital Hamburg provides a dedicated sports medicine team on-site at Rothenbaum every day. In addition to experienced sports medicine specialists, the team also includes resident physicians who gain hands-on experience in caring for professional athletes. The assignment is therefore intentionally used as part of the education and professional development of young physicians in the field of sports medicine.
Under the guidance of experienced tournament doctors, young medical professionals gain insight into the operations of an international elite sporting event and experience firsthand how medical decisions are made under competitive conditions.
A particular focus is placed on immediate on-site diagnostics. During the tournament, the medical team has access to extensive diagnostic capabilities in order to quickly assess and treat injuries and medical complaints. In international elite sports, rapid decision-making and immediate medical care are essential.
