Leipzig: The professor received two awards for scientific achievements
The Heart Center Leipzig congratulates Prof. Holger Thiele on receiving two major awards in 2026. With the Paul Morawitz Prize, the German Cardiac Society honors outstanding achievements in cardiovascular research. The award was presented to Prof. Thiele on April 9, 2026, during the DGK Annual Meeting in Mannheim.
Already in March, at the ESC Acute Cardiovascular Care 2026 congress in Lisbon, he received the ACVC Lifetime Research Award in Memory of Magda Heras from the Association for Acute Cardiovascular Care of the European Society of Cardiology — an international recognition of his many years of research.
Prof. Holger Thiele was once again included in the “Highly Cited Researchers” ranking in 2024 and is among the most cited scientists worldwide; in the field of clinical medicine, he ranks among the 443 most cited researchers. His work combines scientific excellence with direct clinical relevance—particularly in the areas of acute myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock, mechanical circulatory support, and interventional cardiology.
His latest publication in the European Heart Journal, for which he served as a corresponding co-author, demonstrates based on the ECLS-SHOCK study that in infarction-related cardiogenic shock, treatment in specialized heart centers with high case volumes was associated with lower mortality compared to less specialized centers. The so-called extracorporeal life support (ECLS) is a mobile heart-lung support system that temporarily takes over the pumping function of the heart and oxygen supply, particularly in cases of cardiogenic shock.
The study provides highly relevant clinical evidence for the organization of care for critically ill cardiac patients. The double recognition highlights research that combines international visibility with direct benefits for patient care.
