Helios Wuppertal: Prof. Florian Gebauer new Director of Clinic for General & Visceral Surgery

The Clinic for General and Visceral Surgery at Helios University Hospital Wuppertal is now under new management: Prof. Dr. med. Florian Gebauer has been Clinic Director since December 1, 2022, replacing Prof. Dr. med. Hubert Zirngibl, who will remain with the hospital as Chief Physician until the end of the year and as Senior Consultant from the new year.

The 41-year-old most recently worked as managing senior physician in the Clinic for General, Visceral and Tumor Surgery at the University Hospital of Cologne, where he has been head of clinical research since 2021 and played a leading role in the establishment of the Pancreas Center. His main areas of expertise include tumor surgery with a focus on pancreatic and esophageal surgery.  These are highly complex and specialized operations that are only performed at large tumor centers and university hospitals. The experienced surgeon performs a large part of the operations using minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgical procedures. Only the smallest skin incisions are made, which shortens the healing period. This includes, for example, operations in the field of gastric and esophageal surgery, but also in hernia surgery or operations on the small and large intestine.

Germany-wide clinical study also established in Wuppertal

In research, the married family man has specialized in the molecular characterization of patient subgroups in patients with esophageal cancer (cancer of the esophagus), with the goal of providing each patient with a drug or surgical therapy tailored to his or her own tumor biology. As head of a comprehensive clinical trial (HOLIPANC study), he and a team at 11 university hospitals in Germany are researching how patients with pancreatic cancer and liver metastases can be offered the option of surgery after chemotherapy. Currently, this is not yet possible in many cases.

"My goal is to be able to offer people in Wuppertal and the surrounding area the best possible medical care together with my team," reports Prof. Gebauer. This, he says, means using the most modern techniques as well as the latest medical findings. "The conditions for optimal surgical therapy and advancing medical progress are ideally met at HUKW."

"We are pleased to have gained a highly qualified, motivated and innovative surgeon for our hospital in Prof. Gebauer, who can look forward to working with a great team here," says Dr. Holger Raphael, CEO of Helios University Hospital Wuppertal.
